Cryptogram maker
Type a sentence, choose how many letters to give away, and print a cryptogram with its answer on the next page. Free, no sign-up.
How it works
A cryptogram swaps every letter of the alphabet for a different one, the same swap all the way through, so a solver can crack it by spotting patterns. The maker builds a random swap in which no letter stands for itself, codes your sentence, then decodes it again to prove it matches what you typed. Your words stay in your browser.
Use it for a classroom vocabulary message, a clue in a treasure hunt, or a birthday note that has to be earned. New to solving them? Read how to solve a cryptogram, or print one of our ready-made cryptograms.
Questions
What is a cryptogram?
A short piece of text in code. Each letter has been swapped for another letter, and the swap stays the same through the whole puzzle. Work out the swap and you can read the message.
Is this cryptogram maker free?
Yes. Make and print as many as you like for personal or classroom use. There is no account and nothing to install.
Can a letter stand for itself?
No. The maker never lets a letter stand for itself, which is the traditional rule for these puzzles.
Does a shared link give away the answer?
Not at a glance. Every puzzle has a link you can bookmark or share, and the sentence inside it is scrambled rather than written out.
Can I make a large-print cryptogram?
Yes. Tick “Large print” for bigger letters and more room to write, or print our ready-made large-print cryptograms.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Press Print, then choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The puzzle and its answer print on separate pages.
